Life sciences

Lithuania’s life sciences industry has skyrocketed over the last two decades and is now regarded as one of the most advanced in Central and Eastern Europe. Since 2010, average annual growth within the biotechnology and pharmaceutical research and production sector has been 14%, and with more than 70% of its output exported, the sector’s reach is truly global.

We’ve got the experience and the know-how

The university system of Lithuania is world class, developing talented and innovative technical professionals that can easily compete in the global biotechnology field.
Alan Malus,
Executive VP at Thermo Fisher Scientific

With a rich scientific heritage that dates back to the 1970’s, Lithuania’s biotechnology industry is outpacing developments in many larger Central and Eastern European countries. Utilising state of the art technology and the country’s highly skilled talent pool, companies such as Moog, Sicor/Teva group, Biotechfarma and Thermo Fisher are putting Lithuanian Life Sciences firmly on the map.

A wealth of motivated scientists at your fingertips

The success of the Lithuanian biotechnology industry starts with our well-developed educational system. Encompassing 16 academic institutions and 15 R&D centres, and with a pool of nearly 23,300 researchers and specialists, we have the talent to help you thrive.

The perfect environment for success

With five integrated science and business Valleys receiving over 400 million EUR of investment into equipment and infrastructure, Lithuania provides the most extensive and up to date support network for life sciences in Europe.  Our Open R&D Network offers open access R&D facilities, equipment, services, and high-level R&D intellectual potential for the creation and development of R&D activities in engineering and information technology, biomedicine and biotechnology, materials science, and physical and chemical technologies. The Joint Life Science Centre in Vilnius not only offers a prime location for clinical trials, with hospitals and university facilities at your fingertips, but also one of the most advanced laboratories in the region.

But why just listen to us?

When Thermo Fisher acquired one of the region’s strongest manufacturers of molecular biology products, they had no idea that within two years they would be employing over 400 specialists in Lithuania. There are now almost 100 researchers employed at the facility, making Thermo Fisher‘s Center of Excellence for Molecular Biology in Vilnius one of the biggest private R&D centers in the Baltic region. And this is only the beginning – Thermo Fisher is currently expanding its production line and intends to hire 110 new specialists by the end of 2016.
